Johanna Winters
A Midwesterner tried and true, I grew up in St. Paul, MN and currently live across the river in Minneapolis. I received a B.A. in studio art with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2007. Upon graduation, I spent two years pursuing my athletic interests as a professional cross country ski competitor, but I was vexed by the time spent away from the studio. I have recently gotten back into the studio and am happy to be re-engaged in the realm of printmaking!
My current work is inspired by television shows and cartoons of my childhood, such as Jim Henson’s Muppet and Fraggle puppets, Richard Scarry, and the Berenstain Bears. I am also curious about the grown-up content of graphic novels and comic art. It is intriguing to me how the simplified imagery of (seemingly) childlike cartoons can speak universally of loaded social content.
